Is Consignment for Me?

Consignment furniture is an idea that has been popular in most parts of the country for many years. In Stillwater, we are behind the times in putting this into practice and I plan to remedy this by adding consignment furniture in my store.  By doing this I hope to add a dimension of furniture that may not have been available before.  I will be seeking items for consignment in the areas of quality, solid wood bedroom furniture and contemporary home decor accessories.

By adding consignment furniture, I feel I can create an outlet for several different segments of the population: 1) seniors looking to downsize, 2) people moving out of the area who do not want to move their furniture, 3) people remodeling or tired of their current furniture, 4) those whose children have outgrown different stages of furniture, and many others.

One advantage of consignment is you will not have to deal with anyone over the best price for the furniture.  If you cannot negotiate well, someone might take advantage of that.  If you overprice, you may not get a buyer.  Are you aware of what your furniture is worth?  Do you want to take the time to find out?  Do you have the time to deal with it?

Another advantage is you do not have to have anyone come to your house.  With the problems we have today, are you wanting people to know where you live?  Do you want them to know what you have in your home?  Wouldn't it be better to let strangers show up at a store location rather than your house?

Also, have you thought about how you will get the word out that you have something for sale?  Will you advertise in the newspaper?  Shop 'n Swap?  Craig's List?  How many people will see it?  How many will respond?  Wouldn't it be easier to have your merchandise in a store that has customers shopping daily? The advertising will be done for you without cost to you.

Finally,  if you are on a tight budget, it could help you financially as well.  If you are unable to sell it yourself, you may have to  pay for storage, give it to family, or donate it to charity.  None of these will add to your pocketbook, they may even cost you money.  By consigning, you will have an opportunity to receive money for your once loved furniture.
